The Fourth Annual Varna International
Master Class in Piano
June 21 - 29, 2007
Join us in beautiful Varna, Bulgaria for nine days of stimulating master classes,
recitals, and the exciting final competition, plus festive receptions and dinner celebrations. Come and see the incredible sights of Bulgaria and listen to some joyous music making!

John Kenneth Adams, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of South Carolina. Professor Adams performs world-wide and is an authority on the piano music of Claude Debussy, performing his complete piano music in cycle.

Soon Bae Kim ,
Professor of Piano, Hansei and Soongsil Universities:

Soon Bae Kim is one of South Korea's most outstanding pianists, and is known particularly for her commanding performances of contemporary piano music. She teaches at Hansei and Soongsil Universities, and also writes for several leading Korean music publications.

 

 

 

Milena Mollova,
Professor of Piano, New Bulgarian University in Sofia:

Milena Mollova has been long admired as one of Bulgaria's leading pianists. She performs the complete Beethoven Sonatas and this year has performed all of the Beethoven violin/piano sonatas as well. She gained international recognition as a prize winner in the very first Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

- Bogdan Stanev, Collaborative Artist, Sofia Academy of Music, Bulgaria.

- Sungeun Choi, Professor of Piano, Catholic University of Korea, South Korea.

- Boyan Bachvarov, Professor of Piano, Varna School of the Arts, Bulgaria.

Participation Categories:

Performer: Performers will perform in the master classes, final competition, and
receive three lessons with the three master teachers.

Associate: Associates will receive a master class lesson or a private session with a master teacher. In addition, they will receive two lessons with the teaching associates apart from the master class schedule.

Auditor: Open to all interested teachers, students, and public.

Cost:
Including tuition, piano practice rooms, 10 nights lodging in down town Varna (double occupancy*), breakfasts, a welcome reception of all participants and a final celebration.

Registrations will be accepted no later than May 10, 2007.

Special Concerts and Lecture-Recitals:
John Kenneth Adams will present a special Schubert Evening featuring Schubert's Sonata in B Flat Major, Opus posthumous, preceded by comments about this great masterpiece. Soon Bae Kim will continue her exploration of major contemporary masterpieces with a recital featuring works by Oliver Messiaen. Recitals by Milena Mollova always captivate her audiences, for example her exquisite performance of Chopin's Four Ballades at last year’s master class.

Final Competition:
The final competition will be held the evening of June 29, with a Preliminary Audition held the evening of June 28. The final competition is open only to Performers in the master class.

Awards:
The Varna International Master Class accepts students on both the Intermediate and Advanced Level. The First Prize will be $1000 on the Advanced Level (over age 15) and $500 on the Intermediate Level. Smaller amounts will be awarded for outstanding finalists.

General information for master class participants and auditors:
Participants in the Varna International Master Class have easy access to a wide variety of sights and activities. Varna is endlessly fascinating, taking one back in time with its quaint Art Nouveau architecture with Eastern touches. One finds the Gold Museum, with the oldest gold in the world, the Roman Baths, the vast seaside park that stretches for miles along the Black Sea, and numerous restaurants and shops in a traffic free area.

Major tourist destinations near Varna include Queen Marie of Romania's beautiful estate and garden at Balchik, the Madara Horseman and ancient rock monasteries near Schumen, where one also find the birthplace and museum devoted to Pancho Vladigerov, the great Bulgarian composer. The peninsula of Nessebar is one of the most ancient sites in the world, with a fine museum of great archeological interest and the fascinating village itself, full of Byzantine churches and ancient houses.

Especially for auditors:
Auditors will have the opportunity to participate in three excursions including tour guides, private transportation and lunches representing authentic Bulgarian cuisine: 1. An excursion to the city of Varna. 2. An excursion to the peninsula of Nessebar. 3. An excursion to the ancient city of Balchik with its beautiful Botanical Gardens.

Accommodation:
Participants will be housed in three star hotel rooms or in studio apartments conveniently located in close proximity to the master class auditorium, the practice facilities, major tourist attractions and the beach.

Airfare:
At your request, we will reserve your airline round trip USA - Bulgaria. The approximate cost from gateway cities of the USA is $1400 including airport taxes. Airline prices are subject to change.
